In 1906, when engineers from Standard Oil walked through the Mississippi River farmland that is now Wood River, Illinois, they immediately recognized the tremendous potential of the site: convenience to the St. Louis market and beyond, plentiful water, the potential for both river and rail transportation and substantial acreage for development. They moved quickly to locate a major refinery there that would become a powerful economic generator for the entire region for nearly 75 years before it closed in 1980.
Today, with substantial acreage ready for redevelopment, BP is committed to returning this important site to productive re-use for the community.
